Where Has My Bullet Journal Taken Me?

  • 5 min read

This article was first published on Medium.

I love using Analog Tools not just for productivity. It is also for those times that I have to log my feelings and thoughts. For me, it is still pen and paper that wins me over and over again each time I want to start working within myself.

I received an email from the Bullet Journal official newsletter that started with this headline: “Where has your Bullet Journal taken you?”

It was a kind of reflection that I think I needed. Some of the answers were some of their Bullet Journals were found in unexpected places. Let me place here what some of the community stated:

On kitchen tables at 5am.

In hospital waiting rooms.

In a tent with a headlamp clipped to the cover. On the tray table somewhere over the Atlantic.

In a parked car outside a job someone wasn't sure they wanted to walk back into.

However, the real question is not about where I have taken my Bullet Journal, but where has my Bullet Journal taken me?

I kind of paused and started recollecting.

It took me to somewhere I never thought I could be.

I was a full-time teacher during that time and had been navigating through the challenges of the pandemic. A new season of having a baby entered the picture and I think it really changed my whole world. Not to mention, I was a graduating student in grad school and doing my internship simultaneously.

Man, it was hard.

Nevertheless, I would never trade my experiences for anything else because it has helped me become who I am today.

So where did my Bullet Journal actually take me?

Redefining my Identity

My Journal has become my constant companion during those times. Logging tiny bite-sized notes has transformed my creative workflow ever since. It was not in a million dreams that I thought I could start learning to craft my own blog and start writing. Now, I have been writing consistently and have learned how to build momentum while juggling the things that I do.

I never thought I would also become very intentional with my time the way I am right now. I juggle a 7-5 full time job, while keeping myself as an adjunct faculty in a seminary, while scheduling counseling sessions alongside my vocation as a pastor on weekends. Not to mention that desiring to pursue a healthy family dynamic is also a challenge if I am not deliberate with my time.

The journal has traced my path from being solely a teacher to wearing multiple hats—pastor, counselor, consultant, father, husband. What surprises me most is not that I took on these roles, but that I’ve learned to integrate them. The discipline of writing things down forced me to ask: Who am I becoming? And more importantly: Who do I want to be for the people counting on me?

Identity is one of the things that I truly value. I believe that my design follows my purpose and my Bullet Journal has helped me a lot in understanding who I am.

Examining My Life

Another way the Bullet Journal has shaped my life is in how I manage the events in my 24-hour day. I stopped believing in “time management” as a concept in its essence because everyone has the same twenty four hours. It is how I prioritize the events around it that makes it meaningful.

Being intentional with my time is something that I have learned along the way as I continue to observe the life I live. Bullet Journaling is about writing fora better life, not just for writingmy life.

Each minute success.

Stories of disappointments.

Projects accomplished.

Learning from the people I cherish.

These are all valuable details of my life that have shaped my beliefs and values. Without me regularly reviewing what transpired in my life, I would not have been able to move forward towards a better version of me.

Accounting for the time wasted and stewarded has helped me discover more about myself. I often say, that writing by hand has helped me introspect more of who I am and what I am becoming more than just knowing where have I been and what I have been doing. It has helped me make a more informed decision based on my “why” more than just getting things done without clarity.

Reshaping my Values

The pages of my journal tell a story of shifting priorities. What I valued as a new teacher looks different from what I value now as a father, pastor, and counselor—and that’s not a contradiction. It’s growth.

Without me tracking the past, organizing the present, and planning the future, it would be difficult to understand the things that I value. I could just keep on living my life without taking responsibility of my past actions and fail to get clear on what is truly important.

Values are the things we believe matter most. - Joey Bonifacio

What we value shapes what we see—and what we overlook. I’ve learned that my truest values aren’t the ones I profess but the ones my desires reveal. When I flip through the pages of my journal, I find clues in the things I longed for, complained about, and celebrated. These recurring themes expose what genuinely matters to me, even when it differs from what I assumed I cared about.

When I discovered my values, it became like a compass that has helped me make the right choices and become more deliberate with where I want to be in my life.

Final Thoughts

My Bullet Journal has taken me not to places, but to a deeper understanding of who I am. It has definitely helped me live a much more meaningful life compared to before. Through its pages, I’ve redefined who I am across my many roles, learned to examine my life rather than just live it, and discovered the values that truly guide my decisions.

The things that count are often that things that cannot be counted. - JFM

For some people, it might just be another notebook that is easily replaced. But six years later, I still pause and recollect—and every time, I’m amazed at where my Bullet Journal has taken me. Not to a kitchen table at 5am or a parked car outside a job, but to somewhere I never thought I could be: a life examined, a purpose defined, and a self worth becoming.
